Hello all, this seems like a very newly set up website and not much of activities. But I can't find better place to post my question, so here's my shot...
Ever since I switched to Mac 2 years ago, my HP laptop became redundant. I tried selling it but it could only yield a terribly low price; therefore I'm instead thinking of making it more useful now by turning it into a Linux machine, and I can use it as file server.
I have tried downloading Ubuntu (both desktop and server versions) from Ubuntu official site, but after burning the ISO to the disc (tried on both CD and DVD), I can't seem to boot the laptop from it. I have checked BIOS set up and was sure to set the dvd disc drive as first boot device, somehow it kept end up booting Vista.
When I tried reading the disc in Vista, it says Windows cannot recognize the disc format.
Now, I wonder if by getting a copy of Ubuntu installer disc may help the situation. Question is: where in Singapore can I get one immediately?
I'm actually willing to compensate someone who can help me set it up too. Any kind soul who can spare a moment to help, I hope to hear from you.
Where can I get Ubuntu
What i did to make a bootable cd is to use a freeware windows program called "CDburnerXP" which i downloaded off http://www.download.com
I made sure to select burn to boot cd, and select the iso file.
winxp drag and drop cd burning utility is crap, to be honest.
If you have a spare thumbdrive
You could also download UNetbootin http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/ and use it to make a 'Live USB' of Ubuntu (you can use the iso file you downloaded, or re-download using UNetbootin if you do not have a copy of the iso file on hand).
You can then boot from your USB thumbdrive (useful if you cannot boot from your dvd disc drive, or find discs too bulky or somewhat).
Personally, I prefer to use my thumbdrive as it is arguably more portable and rewritable (pretty handy for daily builds). I also find booting from a USB drive faster.
Hi deanloh ,
Hi deanloh ,
Yup , our forums are not active right now , we just migrated to drupal from joomla a few weeks ago so we lost our previous topics. However , we are usually more active on mailing list and on the irc channel.
For the installation discs , to confirm , you are getting the 32bit version of the 8.10 desktop right? http://download.ubuntu.sg/intrepid/ubuntu-8.10-desktop-i386.iso .. This is the file that you should have burned it as an bootable image , not as a datafile.
If you still need help , I be free tomorrow and Thursday , pls email me at billy @ ubuntu.sg. Pls do join our mailing list and irc channel too.
regards
Billy
Hi deanloh ,
hi deanloh, u need to download a iso extractor if i am not wrong. thn burn it to disc thn ok liao...
i am in east area. if u staying nearby thn let me know. i might be able to help you :)
Hi deanloh ,
West area find me.
Anyway, try burn the disc at the lowest possible speed.
Usually I use those lower speed CDR/CD-RW to burn.
Burning speed is about 4X to 12X
Burning too fast might make the disc unreadable
Not Necessary to Extract the ISO Image
Hi ivan,
You dont really need to extract the ISO image. Instead, burn the image directly on disc using "Burn Image to Disc" function. It will create a bootasble disc for you automatically.
If you choose to extract the ISO image and then burn the data onto disc, it will not be bootable.
I hope, this will help clear the air.
Thank you.

Hi deanloh ,
